VAT / GST Calculator
Add VAT to a net price or take it back out of a gross price — with presets for common country rates and an explanation of the exact math.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a net price?
Multiply the net amount by (1 + rate/100). For example, £500 net at 20% VAT → 500 × 1.20 = £600 gross. The VAT portion itself is £100.
How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Divide the gross amount by (1 + rate/100). A common mistake is subtracting the rate from the gross directly — £600 gross is NOT £480 net at 20% VAT; it is £500, because VAT is 1/6 of the gross, not 20% of it.
Which VAT rates should I use?
Common ones: UK standard 20% (reduced 5%), Germany 19% (reduced 7%), France 20% (reduced 5.5%), Ireland 23%, Singapore GST 9%, Australia GST 10%, New Zealand GST 15%. The rate field is free-form, so any regional rate works.
What is the difference between VAT and GST?
Functionally nothing for this calculation — Goods and Services Tax (GST) in countries like Australia, Canada, Singapore and New Zealand works the same way as VAT in Europe. Just enter your local rate.
