How much should I tip in the US?
For sit-down restaurant service, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard — 20% for excellent service. Takeout typically 10%, baristas $1–2 per drink, and food delivery 15–20% with a minimum of a few dollars.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Custom is to tip on the pre-tax amount. The tax line is not part of the service you are rewarding.
Does the split include the tip?
In this calculator, “per person” divides the bill plus tip evenly. If your group prefers to split only the food bill and tip separately, use the tip amount line instead.
