Frequently asked questions
How should roommates split rent?
The two fairest methods are equal split (simplest, best for similar rooms) and income-proportional split (each pays the same share of their income). If rooms differ in size, privacy or amenities, weight each room’s share by its value — an en-suite master bedroom typically justifies 10–20% more than a small interior room.
How does income-based rent splitting work?
Add everyone’s take-home income, then each person pays rent × (their income ÷ total income). Example: $2,000 rent with roommates earning $3,000 and $5,000 means a $750/$1,250 split. Everyone contributes the same *share* of their income, which most people perceive as fair over time.
Should utilities be split the same way as rent?
Usually not. Fixed utilities (internet) split equally; usage-based ones (electricity, water) also split equally unless one person works from home or the usage gap is extreme. The simplest robust system: split rent by your chosen method, split utilities equally, and track shared groceries in a separate app.
