Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change compares a new value to the original value: ((new − original) / original) × 100. Percentage difference compares two values relative to their average: (|a − b| / ((a + b) / 2)) × 100, and it has no direction (no “increase” or “decrease”).

How do I calculate X percent of a number by hand?

Convert the percent to a decimal and multiply: X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y. For example, 15% of 80 = 0.15 × 80 = 12.

Can percentage change be more than 100%?

Yes. If a value doubles, the change is +100%. Tripling is +200%. The percentage can exceed 100% without any error — it just means the value more than doubled.
