Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Divide the trip distance by your vehicle’s fuel efficiency to get gallons (or liters) needed, then multiply by the fuel price. For example: a 600-mile trip at 30 mpg needs 20 gallons; at $3.50 per gallon that’s $70. The calculator above does this instantly and can split the cost between passengers.
Should I use MPG or L/100km?
Use whichever your vehicle and country use: MPG (miles per gallon) is standard in the US and UK, while L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) is used in most of the rest of the world. The tool switches formulas automatically based on your choice — a lower L/100km is better, while a higher MPG is better.
Does this include other trip costs like tolls or wear?
No — this tool covers fuel only. The true cost of driving also includes depreciation, maintenance, insurance and tolls. AAA estimates the total cost of owning a mid-size car in the US at roughly $0.60–$0.75 per mile, so treat the fuel figure as the variable part of your budget.
